Plastics - quality materials with great prospects

– Sometimes I still encounter the attitude that plastics could not be synonymous with quality. However the plastic materials we work with today cannot be compared with what we used only a few years ago.

Industrilås Director of Design Bengt-Åke Alfredsson explains that many items that were previously die-cast in metal are now successfully injection-moulded in plastic.

– We manufacture in all construction grade plastics. The particular plastic qualities and properties may differ from one item to the next. Stability, impact resistance, torque strength and surface finish are aspects that we evaluate from item to item, according to product requirements and demand, Alfredsson adds.

Today the interest in metal replacements is great, and some plastics have the same properties as metals, but are more affordable and require less energy to produce. Structures and special features can be included directly in the plastic, which among other things renders follow-up work and surface treatments of the items unnecessary.

– There are many advantages to plastics. The quality and the smooth production. The fact that even a rather complicated product is finished right when it exits the machine and that the properties can be tailor made.

Since the entire processes for metal die-casting as well as injection moulding are handled under one roof at Industrilås each individual case can dictate which process is best for the application.

– Sometimes zinc is the best, but just as often the advantages of producing in plastics win out. More and more people are realizing this today, says Alfredsson.

The Industrilås injection moulding machines have a locking power of up to 250 metric tons. This makes it possible to produce items weighing up to 1 000 grams.
